Gin lovers everywhere – put down those G&T’s, polish your drinking lexicon, and get ready for a week of spirited fun across 4 cities with the first India edition of the world renowned #NegroniWeek.
It is widely believed that Count Camillo Negroni’s need for a stiff drink resulted in the invention of the classic Negroni cocktail. While he was drinking his favourite Americano, he asked the bartender to make his drink more potent by adding a few more splashes of gin. The ruby red tinged Negroni was thus created and has persevered through time.
Traditionally served as an apertivo, the Negroni is a perfect drink to stimulate your appetite. It’s made with equal parts Campari, gin, and semi-sweet Cinzano Vermouth Rosso. Each ingredient has a beautiful flavour profile on its own so together they create this magical complexity that gives Negroni its classic status. Gin lends a floral, herb-like flavour, while Campari adds a bitter citrusy note. Stirred together with ice and served with an orange peel for a final citrus flourish, this is one classic even non Gin drinkers enjoy. Every bartender has his/ her secret alteration to the drink depending on customer preference. For example, a swig of smoky rum can replace the gin to please a regular rum-drinker.
If you’re wondering why we’re waxing eloquent about Negroni, it’s because the 3rd edition of the globally popular Negroni Week has finally come to India. It has grown from more than 100 participating bars to more than 1,300 venues around the world. This year, the number of participating bars and restaurants have almost doubled to 2500+ worldwide and we also get a taste of it across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai’s best bars and restaurants.
We are doubly stoked because this 7-day long drinkathon also comes with a good cause, since all bars and restaurants involved contribute part of their earnings from the week (minimum $1 for each Negroni sold) to a local charitable organisation of their choice. Since its inception, Negroni Week has raised more than $120,000 for charities with a higher goal for 2015.
Aspri Spririts, the company that imports Campari and Cinzano Rosso to India, are promoting the week in India. It’s the very first time Indian bars have made it as participants so we really need to make the most of it, one sip at a time.
On from June 1st to 7th, each bar has its own special menu with bartenders putting their own twist to the classic.
