Synopsis

The Dover and Birch families meet for a Thanksgiving dinner, after which their six-year-old daughters Anna and Joy go for a walk.

Critic's Review

Story: The Dover and Birch families meet for a Thanksgiving dinner, after which their six-year-old daughters Anna and Joy go for a walk. They don't return. The occupant of a van parked outside is the immediate suspect. Keller Dover (Jackman) then embarks on his own manic search for the girls.

Review: Keller is a religious man whose motto is to 'be prepared'. Accordingly, his basement is stocked up for an apocalypse and the lines on his face show that he's known struggle all his life. Alex Jones (Dano) is the occupant of the dilapidated van parked outside their home and after the girls go missing, Keller's gut instinct that Alex is behind the abduction turns him into a man obsessed with breaking Alex.

Investigating the case, Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) is tattooed, brooding, speaks little but is firm. His only sign of emotion is a nervous facial tic. He has never lost a case before but this one tests his mettle to breaking point. His performance builds with quiet intensity. After a round of questioning, Alex, who seems to have the cognitive ability of a small child, is released. Nancy and Franklin Birch (Davis, Howard) believe in Loki's efforts but are mired in grief. As the search goes on and hope begins to dim, Keller descends into his own heart of darkness and his wife Grace (Bello) slips into a sedative haze.

The violence isn't glamourised, but looks as real as possible and therefore, sometimes disturbing. Most visual cues are suggested, but are never overt. Villeneuve's meticulous vision and cinematographer Roger Deakins' lustrous palette of greys, blacks and overcast skies set up an ominous mood, aided superbly by Johann Johannsson's music.

A film with many emotional components, the visceral panic, desperation and helplessness any parent would feel when their children are abducted, forms its bedrock. Each watershed point takes its own time to build. This ensures that you will want to pay attention to the details that makes Prisoners so enjoyable.

Good movie though it stretches a bit too much. I would give 5 stars for the acting but the plot goes slow and you can nearly figure out the end within the first 20 minutes of the story. Not bad for one time watch.

Prisoners, a story about a man whose daughter is kidnapped, is unforgettably relentless in asking moviegoers if Keller has gone too far. And, by extension, asking us how far we would go. In the end, I come down reservedly on the former side: the work done here by Jackman, Gyllenhaal, and especially Villeneuve is simply too powerful to ignore. A film that, for all its pretensions and intermittent power, is essentially high-grade claptrap.

There is nothing terrifically great about the plot or the picturization except for the amazing work done by the cast. The movie starts with two girls (Anna Dover and Joy Birch) getting kidnapped on Thanksgiving despite their parents being cautious, the one aspect that scared me a lot, because they(parents) did all the right things, there weren’t any stupid mistakes and yet, the kids end up getting kidnapped. The two families deal with the situation very differently and the movie provokes you to assess what kind of person you are and how you would deal with (god forbid) situations like these. I was thrilled to see Rhodey of Iron man (aka Terrence Howard), and he was amazing as a scared father not knowing what to do to get his child back. Hugh Jackman comes of as a stubborn father who tries to take the law into his hands when the system does not help him. And Jake Gyllenhaal is convincing as a sensible yet practical detective. Unfortunately, his screen name is Loki. The mothers were fitting but not emotionally straining which is a good thing because Hugh alone makes you convalesce with pain and anger at the fate that has befallen his little girl. The older siblings are smart, responsible and caring. I was worried from the beginning that the movie might be too graphical for my taste but fortunately, it did not rely as much on the bloody gore as it did on the terrific performances of its cast. But the one fact I could not comprehend is that - the police let go off the sole lead they have just because he would not respond to their questions. I mean, I have heard that police tear down suspects houses, use third degree investigation methods(pealing off nails, asphyxiation, etc.,) to get the truth. Anyway, they just let the guy walk in the end, just because he was abducted as a child. In retrospect , I am glad that Keller(Hugh) took it upon him to get the truth from this guy. It is an emotionally straining movie because it is very close to reality. And you would end up wondering how many of those missing children are actually found in real life. But it is a good watch just for the performances of the amazing cast.

As usual very good job done by Hugh Jackman. He perfectly portrayed the condition of a father whose little princess is being kidnapped, going totally mad behind the only related suspect he's got when Police proved its failure. Very good movie.

watching Hugh Jackman in another role besides the wolverine, takes some time getting used too, especially in his role of rustic father. The slow pace of the movie is well rewarded by the thrills and actions nearer to the end. Hugh can act and with a certain flavor for showing a mixed range of emotions from anger to frustration and sadness - which is revelation for an actor who has nearly been typecast as an action man. The movie ending is one which leaves you with a feeling with - please show the conclusion but in hindsight - it is a fitting end to all the twist and turns that presents itself in the movie A must watch if you are Jackman fan or if you like thrillers, even if not watch it anyways - it will entertain you. As an end note - one of my favorite scenes is the parody of jingle bells that children sings - Jingle bell - batman smells - robin laid an egg.

In less talented hands, the story could lapse into the maudlin. But Villeneuve, director of the Oscar-nominated Incendies, seems to know just how far to go; only one moment feels less than authentic, but it would be a spoiler to mention it.

A very good plot, well played characters and a great ending gives you this amazing movie. Very few thriller movies live up to their expectations but this one definitely does. The plot keeps you on the edge of your seat and at every moment keeps you guessing. It has all the elements of a great suspense thriller. And though the ending is abrupt and makes the audience wonder what next, for the "glass half full" people out there, think of a happy ending.

first thing you will notice about this movie is that it is unusually long, 2 and a half hours. story is very gritty, audience will be unable to decide who did it, and some will know he did it, but believe me when i say, there is a greater twist. screenplay is good, performance is commendable, from this movie again HJ proved he can do some serious roles too other than being wolverine. I'm a fan of both HJ and JG, but frankly JG pulls it off as a calm and composed but troubled detective. bottom-line, must watch one time

Hugh Jackman takes you on a trip through the intense emotions a family is put through during its darkest hour. This may be his best role to date. From the trailers you know that his character will be out for blood as their daughter was kidnapped, but throughout the film you feel his pain, anger and moral struggles as he deals with this situation. The director does an excellent job of keeping you invested in the film emotionally even through some intensely violent scenes. Its dreary setting provides no comfort, but goes hand and hand with the narrative. This film may not be for those faint of heart but should be a must see for most viewers.
