Even before you step into the theatre make sure you know what lies in store for you. Action and loads of noise. But then if you are an ardent fan of the 2000 AD comic strip titled Judge Dredd -- yes, yet another comic book hero comes alive on screen -- nothing is a wee bit confusing for you. You know the judges, the jury members, the executioners, the brokers of law etc are all but one people in this future city of America -- Cops. And if Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is who we are talking about, the word is super cop.
As the uniformed judge -- who looks all smart, hi-tech and confident -- Karl makes sure justice prevails in every nook and corner of the Peach Tree. Watch out for the shielding of the Peach Tree scene. In fact, the onus of giving us all that extra dose of action lies with him... and his trainee partner, Anderson (Olivia Thirlby). Olivia, on the other hand, plays the perfect, obedient helper with an extra ability to predict the past... and sometimes the unsaid. But then the one leading to all that mess is the bad girl, Ma-Ma and her gangsters. Lena Headey with her bloody eyes and scared face is mean, aggressive and dangerous. The three leads indeed make up for an otherwise great (edge-of-the-sea kinda) plot.
So as long as the bullets keep whizzing -- there are a couple of slow, dead and non-action moments-- Dredd 3D has things going its way. And if not anything else, it's over to the scenes that show junkies falling off skyscrapers in super slow motion... stopping time and creating some great, stunning (and brutal too) visuals in 3D.

Only the special effects are good. Stallone a made a better judge dredd in the earlier version.

The only aspect which made Dredd from a one time watch to a good movie are the special effects. 3D lovers will love the slo-mo effects.

With style and dour charisma to spare, Dredd proves that the smartest way to handle an action plot is often the simplest, while also tossing in enough flash to set itself apart. It didn't have quite enough fun with its ideas and location as I'd hoped for, but it's got plenty of strong raw material to get it to the finish line-- if this is the next evolution of the Die Hard formula, John McClane would probably feel exhausted by the darkness but also a little proud.

Wow, finally a good 3D Sci-Fi. This is the best adaptation of a comic-character to the big-screen that I've seen.This film for me is up there with my favourite movies: District 9, Aliens, Robocop, The Running Man, Terminator and Blade Runner.

And here comes one more action packed 3D stuff from Hollywood. Watch this one for amazing action sequences in 3D along with some short but nice performances by its cast. But I seriously fear that in 2D, this movie is sure to fall flat. Nevertheless its not bad for one time watch.

Judge Dredd is one of the oldest characters they have in 2000 a.d comics. I used to read them when i was a kid. I really didn't like the old movie staring Stallone. But this one was just awesome. They stuck to the character in the comics where he never reveals his face. Even with the helmet on Karl Urban could show various emotions like his seriousness, his frustrations, him under estimating his partners talents etc.That is qualities of a good actor as well as the talent of the directer. This movie is all about that comic book and that's why it is so good.
