Professor Sherlock Holmes must save the world all over again. He must save it from old foe Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). And he must do it with old friend John Watson (Jude Law). This means he must put an end to all the anarchist bombers, sharpshooters, creating chaos the world over, with their heinous crimes. Elementary, my dear Holmes?
Lots of problems here Mr. Holmes in your second outing as the flamboyant action hero. But first things first. As a piece of cinema, we do agree of Guy Ritchie's reinvention of the 124 year-old-hero from an cogitating the orising intellectual hero to a daredevil braggadocio. For reinventions are always progressive and take a leap ahead in the history of cinema and fiction. It is only the prude and the fastidious who turn up their nose to any twisting and turning in character and plot.
Also, you can't expect Guy Ritchie to lie low in his story telling. The only way the maverick director tells his stories is to go Lock Stock Smoking Barrels. Hence, like the first film, Game Of Shadows also follows the same idiom of action cuts classically put together to create a fast paced, visually stunning film. Some of the action sequences which include a train fight (a war rather than a fight) with Holmes' unconventional act against Watson's newly wed wife, a forest escape, a pub brawl on Watson's stag party, Holmes' attempt to downsize an enemy whom he visualizes as a primate bird, are absolutely mesmerising. The film is a relentless action experience which gives enough to adrenaline hunters to get an overdose. Other than that is the atmospherics of the film that are admirable. Shot in dense, damp, depressing and dark London's foggy weather, the visuals show you only as much as you need to see. Truly a game of silhouettes and shadows. The visual appeal will not leave you disappointed nor will the plot which travels all across the globe and climaxes in a peace summit in Switzerland. A word about the dialogues: Arresting, humourous and laced with Downey's characteristic sardonic wit.
So where lies the problem? Too much action, infact it seems there is only action. Too long a film that might make action buffs go wild with joy but for those who like their films with a bit of drama, they will end up with a hollow feeling. Here there is too strong a reinvention of our favourite detective. After all, we did love the intellectual scholar that lay beneath that hat and loved to follow his deduction when crimes occurred and solutions were needed. For, Sherlock Holmes deductions were beyond the realm of normal intelligence. But here we hardly get to see Holmes playing Rodin even for a moment and showing us how he reaches conclusions and places. Don't transform Holmes into a totally new character from the one Arthur Conan Doyle conceived in the 1980s, Mr. Ritchie. A bit of your brilliance blended with the vision of Doyle will subtly do the trick.
Performance wise Robert Downey Jr. once again walks away a scene stealer and Jude Law assiduously walks along. Needless to say, you might end up a wee bit disappointed with Professor Moriarty who has always been a larger than life figure in the Holmes scenario. Here, he is dwarfed by the other players and the events. Maybe, the fact that Brad Pitt was suppose to play Holmes' arch enemy creates a sense of disappointment.

Not for Sherlock purists because the character depicted in the movie is nowhere close to the original. Decent action and a thrilling climax nonetheless.

Forget Arthur Conan Doyle's Holmes and prepare yourself for Ritchie's Holmes and you have a treat!!

too fast paced, hence a bit difficult to understand the basic story-line; however, immensely watchable and riveting!

Good movie and has enough twists, thrils and action scenes like a bollywood masala film. The train sequence was avesome. The Baddie professor had to be killed (without it looking as a murder) otherwise he would have created wars for his own profit which has a similarity with the climax of Singham.

Murder Mysteries, Thrillers or something in that era with some mystery around it fits perfectly with Sherlock Holmes as was the case in intial movie. Theme in the Game of Shadows may suit James Bond bu not Sherlock Holmes. Music Mesmerising, english Humor good as always, Story - lost in woods- Are we talking here about first or 2nd world war??

First things first, this movie is better than its prequel. Period. Now, Guy Ritchie's interpretation of our favourite detective may seem offensive to some. But a director has all the creative freedom in the world to interpret it in an entirely different fashion, But being an ardent SH fan, I say I loved Guy RItchie's version a lot. I still do not understand, why US and UK critics have panned the movie. Nikhat Kazmi, please grow up!

Worst review I've ever read! Critics for this movie didn't really understand the plot I guess. That's why all those mixed comments. Guess Ra.One had the dumbest plot so it got 4 undeserved stars from the same people! Sad! Holmes 2 is one of the best movies ever made!

This is one of the best movies plot I've ever seen. Hats off to Guy Ritchie for his outstanding eye-catching plot revealing technique. I'm sure SRK movies would follow this style of story revealing to audience and this reviewer (Nikhat Kazmi) would throw tantrum to those second class movies by giving 4 stars.what a waste of time by going through his review! Never ever will I go through his review!

what poor sense of reviewing a film .the reviewer dose not have any sense for good cinema .complete nonsence . do you know who guy ritchie is and the type of movies he makes . I think you should review only bollywood films like ra.one and give 5 start to them and dance on chammak challo .I would like to tell the readers to refer to IMDB for genuine movie reviews and not this stupid site for hollywood movie reviews where genuine movie lovers express their views. I have seen many previous comments deleted . Deleting the bad comments wud do no good to you TOI learn to take criticism .

It's a nice movie, but from the beginning we all knew who is the Holmes's nemesis is, I was expecting a great suspence of some sort which gets reviled in the end, but over all it was a enjoyable movie.
