Curated by Bhowmik Kaushik, this exhibition explores the cinema produced in Japan during the 1960s and 1970s referred to as the 'Japanese New Wave'. It consists of some of the most ideationally and technically daring films featuring directors like Susumu Hani, Yoshishige Yoshida, Imamura, Seijun Suzuki and many others. They have created challenging works - both thematically, dealing with themes like sexual violence, racism, and the devastating aftermath of World War II, employing shock effects and confrontational imagery. The aesthetics as well as common themes that ran during these movements can be observed through the exhibition.
