New Visions: Contemporary Traditional Indian Folk and Tribal Art

Curated by Minhazz Majumdar, this show presents some of the stimulating new works by artist Pushpa Kumari and Pradyumna Kumar (Madhubani), Kalam Patua (Kalighat) Mantu and Jaba Chitrakar (patachitra) and Govind, Prakash, Sangita and Somi Jogi (Jogi visionary art). Their contemporary traditional Indian art is an emerging trend with a palpable energy and vitality. The folk and tribal art forms, each possessing distinct cultural and regional characteristics convey social, ritualistic, religious, story-telling, educational, entertainment and above all, as aesthetic expressions of human creativity. The highly symbolic Madhubani paintings, the ritualistic Pithora art of the Rathwa tribe, the engaging simplicity of Warli art, the sinuous lines of Kalighat paintings, the compelling stories of Rajasthani phads and West Bengal patachitras - these are just a few of India's many art treasures.
