Ai moves across the city in a new, playful avatar. Colourful interiors; great food. Most restaurants grow older with the passage of time. Guppy (formerly Ai) has grown visibly younger.

Atmospherics:
Having the corner plot in the Lodi Colony Market means that the area comprises a courtyard, a bar and the restaurant. The bright, cheerful colours and youthful prints give the restaurant a young, non-serious look. In contrast, the food is a canny combination of what Japanese expats would like to see plus dishes that would please the ladies-who-lunch set. In a way, Guppy represents the evolution of Japanese dining in our city. The one factor that they have not thought about is the noise level: with no sound-absorbing material in the restaurant, meal-time here is a rather noisy proposition indeed. Guppy is a chef-driven restaurant, and the great part is that though the menu is comprehensive, you can order off the menu within reason and it will be made for you.

Table talk:
First the standout dishes. Guppy signature black cod (Rs 1750) is just as great as it was when the restaurant was in Saket: the crisp skin, melting flesh and sweet sauce makes it a must-order. It is the most expensive dish on the menu, all the others being in the Rs 200-800 range. The other must try is the chirashi salad (Rs 500) that I asked to be converted into chirashi sushi. Basically a bowl of seafood atop a bed of rice, it is a more unusual form of sushi (in our city at any rate) and usually is a cue for the chef to show off his artistic skills, because the rules of cutting and arranging the seafood are not as rigid as for, say, nigiri.

The other signature dishes are the Guppy signature pork belly (Rs 900) that is braised with soy and honey till it melts in the mouth. Served on yakitori skewers, it is one of their finest offerings. The other comfort-food-meets-meticulously-prepared stock is the chashu ramen (Rs 800). The home-made noodles have a pleasant elasticity rather than the overcooked sodden mass one usually encounters, and the flavourful stock (prepared over 72 hours, the menu tells us) has an umami appeal.

There are set menus that are worth exploring, consisting as they do of soup, salad, rice/noodles, sushi, dessert and a main course (Rs 800-950)

Plus and Minus:
The combination of authentic food with total unpretentiousness; minus: the decibel level.

Must Try:
Teriyaki glazed artichoke and tofu; grilled chicken breast; rock corn tempura.

Guppy By AI - Located in the Lodhi Market which is becoming a new destination for fine dine. The Ambiance of Guppy is modern Japanese with anime painting on the wall , cartoon characters, loud orange color and a nicely done small courtyard . Food talks 1-Asparagus cream cheese roll (Veg) - The sushi was made nice and perfect . There was balance of flavors which were enhanced with Japanese soya sauce and wasabi 2 California roll(Non Veg)- They are the inside out Sushi made in USA which have moved Sushi to a new level around the world . In this kind of sushi Rice come outside the sushi rather than the traditional which has rice inside . Tasted nice 3 Garlic fried rice(Veg) - Fried rice had lot of texture and tasted really nice . Garlic and rice being a perfect marriage 4- Karashi Vegetable Casserole (Veg)- Karashi is a type of mustard used in Japanese cuisine . A nice mixture of vegetables in Karashi served in earthen pot which added taste and aroma to the dish . It went well with the fried rise 5 Mushroom Gyoza(Veg) - Jiaozi originated in china which are tender pan fried dumplings , which travelled to Japan were it was modified . The garlic increased and dumpling for thinner in japan . The seasoning for Jiozi in Japan is soya . But they do keep out favorite chili garlic sauce as well .They were made to perfection and loved the thinness of Gyoza6-Chili Lime Dressed Agedashi Tofu - Tofu is the main source of protein in Japan for Vegetarian food . The tofu was fried well with an excellent dressing . The tofu just melts in your mouth 7- Crisp Vegetable Harumaki - Harumaki are japanses spring roll which are supposed to be fried like the chines version . But it was made a healthy version by using puff pastry instead. 8- Petit Four - Carrot Cake, Chocolate Fudge Cake , Nutty Chocolate - This was the best carrot cake that I have tasted ever in Delhi . It's perfect sweet little dessert platter.

Husband and I received severe food poisoning after eating at the restaurant and the chefs response was you two were the only ones to get sick that night. Are they used to having more people fall sick after eating there? The chefs other excuse was different bodies react differently to food. Well I guess my body doesnt react very well to being poisoned. I have eaten there previously without problems but after this experience will not be going back.
