Did you know that the first Chicken Cafreal in Goa was served at O'Coqueiro? Way back in 1968, a small eating joint came up with this simple Goan fare, which was popularized by Chef Gines Viegas when he returned from East Africa. The capture of the notorious Charles Sobraj added further lustre. Chef Peter Fernandes, who was apprenticed to the legendary Gines at that time, remembers sourcing out the rope for the police. Today, with Chef Peter - he was awarded the "Best Chef of India" in the non-hotel category by the Government of India - at the helm, O'Coqueiro has developed a reputation for serving authentic Goan Portuguese food. The name Coqueiro itself lends credence to most of the masalas that go into the preparation - it means "coconut tree". The older staff will tell you that the notorious Sobraj was nursing a feni and a Chicken Cafreal and Stuffed Crabs before he was caught. Good taste. The crabs spiced to perfection before being stuffed in the shell is delicious. As is the Stuffed Mushrooms with Cheese. (The kitchens are capable of taking out old vegetarian delicacies popular in the Goan kitchens.) Another hot favourite is the Tisreo Sukhe, if you do not mind getting your fingers dirty. And the roasts? The tongue and the pork? Old traditional fare but oh..oh so tasty. The chefs have created the traditional fare which evokes nostalgic memories, thus matching the simple dining hall with black-and-white photographs that adorn the walls. The dessert menu is the sweet finale - Bibinca made at home, and Chocolate Brownies. Or perhaps the traditional Cream Caramel. The O's that emit from your chords as each and every morsel is savoured perhaps could be put together in a song: "…O…o…o co…queiro".

When I went on a fun trip to Goa with my friends, we did some research on where we can get authentic Goan Portugese food and we got to know about this place, O’ Coqueiro. The ambience is very relaxing and distressing in this restaurant. We set there for some hours and felt the aroma as well as the chilled out charm of the place. From the menu we picked crab and Tisreo Sukhe to be the best and worth coming back for. O’ Coqueiro is lovely, delicious and seriously mouth watering place in Goa.

This being my first visit kept me excited. The ambiance was a beautiful one. The food was finger licking but yes at the same time heavy on the pockets. will have to think again before going. Do try if your pockets are full!!
