The famous Baba au Rhum was invented in Paris in 1835. Of course history attributes the Baba au rhum to many origins, but this small yeast cake saturated in liquor, usually rum, and sometimes filled with whipped cream or pastry cream is a favourite of many. Miles away from Paris here in Goa it is still a treat. Could this dessert be somehow replicated in the sleepy village of Arpora? The basic ingredients of the cake (the start), was whipped together by Leo in 2004. It began to rise in volume not by the yeast this time but by word of mouth about the tasty goodies available there. And then it was ready for the baking. The ovens in this little cafe are filled to capacity - the quiches, pizzas, tarts. The fast moving ones are the Mozarella and the Mediterranean Pizza, the Chocolate and Fig Tart and the Bacon and Onion Quiche. The display counter is full of many more preparations but one must use the oven a little at a time. Since 2004, this little cafe is soaked with tourists and locals alike, despite its basic rusticity in an old Goan house. And the soaking does not stop there. The people who visit this little café, soak in the taste of the goodies, feasting on their appearance and variety. Did we not mention that the Baba au Rhum has the soaking oozing out of the original cake? And then there is the cream. Milkshakes, fresh juices (no additions) it is the creme a la creme of quality and taste. For those who would like a quick bite, the sandwiches and salads are worth a mention. No old grandmother story here (In Slavic the word means grandmother), it's a cafe one must visit to taste the goodness.

The small yet delectable food serving café Baba au Rhum has many takers, which is evident from the crowd that waits for food for considerable time. The establishment is set in an old native house and I come here for their Tarts, fresh juice and quiches. Also their Pizza, Sandwiches, Salads are a good mid day break and coming here has never been a bad experience for me. Baba au Rhum is simple yet attractive and the food might be common yet there is something that keeps bringing me back to it.
