Sweeping story of gangs fighting over the coal capital of the country, where rivalry and revenge cut deep, and 'coal'-blooded crimes are second nature. Shahid Khan is betrayed, and his sons and grandsons swear to avenge his dishonour and death.
This one's a gang bang. Sorry, make that a gang bang-bang; because that's how this story explodes - with bullets, blasts and bust-ups. Throw in gallons of blood, body-counts and 'boom-boom', true Bihari ishtyle. It doesn't need coal to fuel this revenge drama. It fires on Anurag Kashyap's penchant for the dark, dubious, deadly and daring. Starting in 1941, in the dusk of colonial India, in Wasseypur (Dhanbad), the land of coal and scrap trade, simmers an age-old hatred between Muslims and Muslims (Qureshis V/S Pathans). And the bloodbaths, power struggles, family feuds and gang wars rage over three generations.
In this complex drama, with mobs of men (where you almost forgetkitne aadmi the) and myriad shades (mostly dark), the word to remember is Revenge. And revenge is best served hot, 'koyla' hot! Shahid Khan (Jaideep Ahlawat), a good-willed-goonda, impersonates the dreaded Sultana daku (the real Gabbar of colonial India) and loots British trains. Growing gang rivalry compels him to flee his territory, and resettle as a mazdoor in Ramadhir Singh's (Tigmanshu Dhulia) coal mines, where he's betrayed and murdered. But revenge grows in the genes; son Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpai), swears (on his bald pate), that he won't grow his mane or rest until he has Ramadhir's blood on his hands. He's a hot-gun really, in bloody war and in bed. While he's married to the feisty and hot-tempered Nagma (Richa Chaddha), who bears him three sons (including Nawazuddin as Faizal), he sleeps around, philanders and marries the doosri aurat, Durga (Reemma Sen); a Bong firebrand, no less. History repeats, in (Francis Ford Copolla's)'Godfather'-style, as the sons-of-Sardar add their meaty parts to this bloody enterprise, of potent men with powerful 'pistols'.
Manoj Bajpai, in this fully loaded role, is spectacular. He gustily brings to life Sardar Khan, peaking his performance with devilry, crudity and cuss words, while ably toning it with comic moments and a human touch. Truly, a raw diamond in this coal mine.
In his acting debut, Tigmanshu Dhulia, with a striking command over his role, is 'bang' on. The real find in this mine-of-a-cast, boy gang film, is Richa Chaddha. She appears like a mini-handmade bomb, but is quite explosive. Reemma Sen, with few dialogues shows her curves and contempt with ease. Piyush Mishra, as the narrator of this long-winding saga (and Sardar Khan's chachha), magnanimously stays in the background, but silently offloads shocking shades of his character.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui, as a pothead son with a devious mind, even in a brief role leaves a solid impact. Director Anurag Kashyap, in his trademark style of story - telling - realistic, with strong characters, over-the-top sequences, and unadulterated local flavour (crude maa-behen gaalis galore), gruesome bloody violence and raw humour - interestingly spins this twisted tale. This first of a two-part film, is ambitious indeed; showing promise of brilliance in parts, but not bullet-proof to flaws. With a runtime this long, meandering side tracks and random sub-plots, countless characters, documentary-style narrative backed with black and white montages from actual history, it loses blood in the second half because of the Director's over-(self)indulgence. The dialogues are 'killer', adding more quirkiness to this chaos. The electric background score (GV Prakash) keeps the tempo in this drama, and the music (Sneha Khanwalkar) though folkish, is hip and cool. But beware; GOW is not for the weak-hearted. So, hold on to your guns, gamchas and 'womaniyas'.

I see people going "WOW" and what not about this film and honestly this was nothing more than sewage from the gutters of India. And you have people going gaga over the stink! I guess this is matter of taste. One man's food is another man's poison. This is a well made movie in the sense that the story though meandering pointlessly without any purpose still keeps you engaged to see what happens next. Outside of that I see nothing impressive about the foul language or gory violence which in the name of reality is only there for shock value as India's first. Pretty soon there will be another movie that will up the ante on this and then the novelty & shock value will be lost as each new movie will try to touch new depths of depravity trying to outdo the previous one. The hard truth is that humanity is complex. Like I said it is a matter of taste. There will always be people on both sides of the fence - some who see no value in such movies and some who will rant and rave about their greatness. I promise you if you make a movie and show scenes with great length and detail of someone squatting on a railway track and doing their morning business as we see in most slums around India it will be appreciated and nominated for awards by folks in the name of reality portrayed in all its nakedness. However there will be as many folks who will never understand the sense or purpose behind such a venture as there will be people praising the director and writers for portraying and scripting the naked truth in all its bare detail. I agree we have some pretty good talent in this movie. But talent is not enough - you also need the aptitude & class to create something good. In the name of art you can choose to use your talent to create stories & music that are elevating and inspiring or you can choose to cater to the base needs of people. Pornography is a good example. Not everyone can create a porn film - you need talent for that too. But no matter how skillfully you make a porn with great & unique techniques to titillate & depict nudity & penetration I would be at a loss to use the adjectives you use to praise Gangs of Wasseypur. I would find nothing worth praising such an effort and would consider it a huge waste of talent that was unfortunately misguided and misdirected. Personally I like to appreciate how deftly and skillfully a surgeon wields his blade in the operation theater while saving lives. I don't find anything worth appreciating no matter how deftly or skillfully a murderer wields his blade when he slaughters his victims. And no matter how well it is scripted, portrayed with reality or brutally with unique camera techniques or whatever you can think of - it will never have any appeal for me. You might say it deserves an Oscar but for me that is trash/nonsense. Like I said, you might disagree with me. And that is why I say, it is a matter of taste. For some this may be a great film - for me this is garbage that comes from India.

Best movie of the year and probably one of the best of all time. The story is original and yet anyone can relate to it. Gangs is a story of real and colorful people. Gritty, authentic and engrossing. It is what Indian cinema could be and should be like. Manoj Bajpayee is brilliant. He is sadistic and yet funny. In fact not one actor can be ignored. They all stand out. The dark humour, the nostalgic touches of yesteryears and stunning music. I can't praise it highly enough. Do see it. One of the coolest Indian Movies of all time.

hats off to Manoj Bajpayee.. a worth watching flick for those who love to see desi Indian Movie with International ethics... Anurag Kashyap had done remarkable job.. for sure...

was the movie successful only because of the crude gaalis involved, which we're not used to seeing in routine flicks? it absolutely lacked any storyline and was quite drab in the second half.

Anurag Kashyap at his best. Well written and brilliantly directed the characters are perfectly formed and are given due credence by the actors. Manoj Bajpai and Nawazudin Siddique steal the show by their acting and enliven Sardar Khan and Faizal Khan

Based primarily on a village of Dhanbad, namely Wasseypur, Gangs of Wassypur is a film that threads the reality surrounding the village, from an era. The film unfolds itself in a very fashionable manner and time has flawed and transformed throughout the film to reach a context. Gangs of Wasseypur, is certainly a directorial masterpiece weaving the story in such a manner what very few Indian directors have done before. The film would have a tag of commerciality with it, but on a bigger perspective it would rather look like a socio-political parallel realism based film with a certain commercial formula to boast upon. The adventurous and demonstrative journey of the film accounts for the deliberate usage of the subject, through which Anurag has done proper justice. The film starts off with a decent note, where you could not even imagine a â??Tulshiâ?? doing Kyunki Sass bhi kavi bahu thi from a television. But this is what GOW is all about! Full of uncertainty, abstract events, layered characters, unusual socio-political atmosphere, hooliganism and every other spine chilling incidents that would create a shiver on you. It particularly is a story of Gangs rivalry, which had its seeds way back in the years before independence. The story has a complete journey of almost four decades, introducing many a characters and plots in between. Manoj Bajpayee as Sardar Khan has enthralled audiences with his performance. The clichés and dialogues of this supremely talented actor have given a new aura to the film and you could easily get yourself related to him at once. Pervert, passionate, remorseful, vindictive and soft-hearted, all at a same film, is what Manoj Bajpayee has played. The acting parts of Jaideep Ahlawat, Piyush Mishra, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Reema Sen were equally important and worth mentioning, giving rise to the standard of the film. The locales and outstretch far-lands of Wasseypur and Dhanbad were portrayed stunningly onscreen, by cinematographer Rajjev Ravi. The film has exposed many scams of yesteryears including the biggest coal scam and the iron-steel scam. The research work and writing of the film was bang on and the effect was visible on screen. You could transmit yourself to every single thing occurring on the silver screen, without an ascent of reel-ism into it. Finally, the direction has put the film in to newer heights with a storytelling, narrative and portrayal of events like never before. Music of the film has been an added flavor to the raw nature of the film. Tracks like â??Womaniyaâ?, â??Hunterâ? and â??Jiya Tuâ?, suited exceptionally well with the very nature of the film and gave it an added push. Well, the first part of the story has been unfolded to the audiences leaving an ample scope for the next to fill the shoes. The present day Wassyepur hasnâ??t arrived yet, its waiting to draw closer.

The movie is long and drags a little because of complexity. It could have been edited much better and made simpler. Inspite of too many characters, length of the film and complexity it is hard not to give it 4 rating

you are the first who rightly categaroized it in to black comedy and it also very deep script which cannot be seen at one time.the landlords,no education about sex, brutal condition of women in india i want to say anurag kasyap has make it great and it may be greatest of bollywood .anurag have shown so many topics humor and patience and in a flow.this must be nominated for oscar .one more information i want to give that it is the first movie in imbd top 250 and friends go further and vote for it in imdb.and it is far superior than ganges of newyork of hollywood.

You have watched the movie with keen interest and enjoyed it too much. After a long time in Indian cinema we are able to see different genre, undisclosed topics ,untouched for many years .This is first rural movie till now focused on every and each part deeply.Every character has his role in brief but they are good in their job.The inner part of Humen being(Shaitaan/evil ) side has been shown very.Every film does not stara to become a major hit,it only needs story, direction, good strength on the plot(what we are presenting to audience),Language and good acting from all characters.Anurag has done a excellent job by taking a step forward towards dark side of human being,Lastly as per the name it is a serious film, sex comedy which is very much realistic compared to other films.More than the Sardar's gangster life chasing villians, his family background (love, sex and dhoka) ,how his generation moves forward with badle ke aag. This movie is worth watching.
