Mahi Arora has all the trappings of a Bollywood superstar-name, fame and fortune. Unfortunately she's also a manic depressive and constantly courts a death wish. Will Mahi succumb to her weakness or will she manage to stay afloat?
Multiple National-Award winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar takes vicarious pleasure in giving his audience a ring-side view of various walks of life. His Chandni Bar (2001) dealt with Mumbai dance-bars; Page-3 (2005) showed the shallow side of the media and celebrity circus;
Fashion(2008) dealt with the seamier side of the fashion industry. And one must say here that in each of his previous works Madhur was far more in control of proceedings than he is in Heroine; a film that superficially traces Bollywood's underbelly.
The protagonist is Mahi Arora ( Kareena Kapoor), a superstar, who has the world at her feet for a bit in the beginning of this film. Unfortunately she is also fashionably diagnosed with the bipolar syndrome and is happy to destroy herself in her various relationships.
If you are wondering why Sunshine Girl Mahi is on a constant emotional roller-coaster; the narrative tells you that she has had a messed up childhood and hence she has developed this masochistic streak.
So on the one hand, Mahi is cutting ribbons, and shooting for a dozen endorsements. But quickly enough she is also threatened by the arrival of the younger actresses and awards that go missing, To add to her woes, she's drawn like a moth to a flame to her married co-star Aryan Khanna( Arjun Rampal); a cad.
Very clearly the written material at hand draws from unflattering accounts of various real and reel Hindi film heroines of the 80s (unfair to name them because a couple of them are not even around to defend themselves); who were in messy situations with their married co-stars.
In a bid to pack in every piece of studio gossip ever heard; Heroine makes Mahi swing from a relationship with a married actor to another with a successful cricketer ( Randeep Hooda). Cloning stereotypes of what the middle-class call a liberated; Mahi is also shown smoking, drinking and popping pills so frequently; she seems more like a social hazard than a free-thinking girl.
The film is made enjoyable by some pithy dialogue credited to Niranjan Iyengar. Sample this: aap media waalon ko toh script likhna chahiye. Heroine ne gaadi le li-toh businessman ne gift kardi; diamond khareeda, toh engagement ho gayi; hospital gayi check up ke liye, toh abortion ho gaya, LA gayi toh plastic surgery karva liya, aur Dubai gayi toh, uska rate card ban jata hai.
And Heroine would have been crisper had it not digressed to cover every Bollywood insider account. When the maker attempts to show mainstream cinema's condescending attitude towards art-house films, precious screen time is lost. Mahi's attempt to play a prostitute and say scandalous lines are clearly attempted to woo the front-benchers but the gig lacks conviction. The music is a complete let down and even the item song Halkat Jaawani fails to give the required 'rise' to proceedings.
Of course the saving grace of the film is Kareena who not only looks drop-dead gorgeous but is also adept as the girl interrupted.
Tip-off: Heroine is Kareena's Dirty Picture. The actress has shown ample cleavage and partaken in some really intimate bedroom scenes. Definitely worth a dekho!

The movie was a good effort but didn't really have the plot and the elements to make it successful. It was also a little confusing at times. However, Kareena Kapoor Khan, as usual, gave it her best! :-)

Herioine is the story of a famous actress struggling for name and fame in the film industries. this movie depicts the struggles and hardships an actress faces in her life for success in film business. The movie is interesting till the interval and goes on to become boring and lenghty after interval, the audience lose their interest in the movie right after the interval.

Kareena has emerged as one of the best actresses...her acting skills has improved in the past few years... but this movie is the worst direction of Madhur...Hope he could take out reality the way he did in corporate, page 3 and fashion...direction is too bad...this movie had the potential of being one of the best of 2012 but unfortunately due to bad direction it became a flop...2 stars for kareena else it deserved 1...

Lights .. Camera .... Action!!! and this @Heroine will start emoting ... yelling out the difference between a person and an actor.... Yes!! she is saucy, she is above expectations and she delivered her career best till date..... But the script ditched her big time... Bebo showed the hyperbolic path of an actress's career who rose like pheonix but then ......all hells break down and the end result...buckets full of tears!!! The movie may gather mammoth footfalls due to our sultry bebo ... but it surely lacks somewhere in editing and story telling (especially first half).....with average song compositions., this one is not Madhur's best !! Overall Ratings - 2.5/5 .... PS: 1. Watch it for Bebo who is looking absolutely stunning !!! 2. Mr Bhandarkar wake up .."MERA BHARAT MAHAN " has got more serious issues to be canvassed on big screen.... 3. Saif Ali Khan !! plz keep an eye on ur would be ... I think a fidelity test would do :P :P :P

Why didn't they just call it Fashion 2 or something. It is essentially just a mix of Fashion and Dirty Picture in some instances. Having said that, if you liked Fashion - even though it is repetitive and I dont think Kareena was as good as Priyanka, you can potentially like Heroine (cos its sooo similar). The one who comes first kind off takes the cake so Heroine didn't work for me!

Disjoint movie. Plot is not cohesive. Ending is confusing. Kareena tried her best but was in sad state most of the time. Most of the scenes are similar to Madhur'searlier movie "Fashion". This movie niether entertains nor it has any social message. You can ignore this one.

a disappointing screen play.. it was basically an assortment of all leading heroines controversial story into one. the actors did a good job, but could not do much due to the poor story line. guess after fashion, making a movie on heroine has left him with a shallow story line

An just above average movie. Bhandarkar tried to repeat the story line of glamour world of Fashion or Page 3 with a different cast. It was an attempt to project Kareena Kapoor, which was needless. Hence the response was lacklustre.

Seems that somewhere MB has repeated the same mistake that JP did with 'Umrao Jaan' sequel. One's directorial sensibility should stay separated from one's getting besotted with the 'muse'. Great directors, amazing heroines, tons of hard work ... still you don't get the 'great cinema' that you look forward to. However 'good cinema' is at least better than 'pathetic cinema'.
