Synopsis

It's the retelling of an epic saga, of battles and bravery, sacrifice and schemes, plots and platoons. The film follows Arjun's journey and transformation into the iconic mythological hero he is known to be.

Critic's Review

The epic story comes stunningly alive on the canvas of Panchala, where Arjun participates in Draupadi's swayamvar, and quite breathtakingly spears the fish's eye with his dhanush. This scene is spectacular and sets the mood for the film, even makes you hopeful about India's animation industry, struggling to grab attention. The almost 3D-like dive, an underwater sequence and the detailing - superbly impressive.

The story then meanders to Virat, where the Pandavas are in agyaatvaas (unidentifiable avatars) while in exile, and the Kauravas are on a mission to unmask the brothers-in-arms, who are quietly prepping for a blood bath to avenge Draupadi's public humiliation. Lord Krishna also appears at some point, silently supporting the paanch brothers, and resolving their inner battles (read: conscience), with his divine disposition.

When you think Arjun, you think Mahabharata, but this animated story is actually a prequel to the legendary battle of Kurukshetra - a lost chapter from the pages of history that some televised adaptations must have breezed through in half an episode. The frames are so grandiosely designed that you want to soak into this experience, and watch Arjun display his bravado on-field, vanquish the villains, and honour his vow to Draupadi, but alas ... it all ends where the real heroes, all armed and sword-proofed, are ready for the mega dharm yudh.

If you've watched animated films like 'Bal Krishna', 'Ghatothkach', 'Hanuman Returns', this one's a far 'sketch', on a different canvas altogether. Directed (by Arnab Chaudhari) using 2G animation, the look is classic and superior by usual standards in Indian animation. Apart from the swayamvar scene, there's forest-fire, a battle sequence, martial arts, and a 'dicey' game of chaupat that leave you spellbound. Even though it's laced with dialogues that are heavy-weight (like adharm, kartavya, kuruvansh ka sarvanash), the narration of the multi-layered complex saga, laden with countless characters, is easy to comprehend. This journey of a superhero is more for adults than kids on their summer holiday.

Of all the amateurish animation films we've seen, this one's a 'God-sent',

What is difficult to accept is the portrayal of Arjun without a moustache. But it's art, so I forced myself to keep an open mind. Better late than never: the animation is improving. Quite watchable, though. Definitely, the Hindi is a plus point. The wider the variety of Hindi that children learn, the richer is their life experience. It'll make classic films more accessible to them.

Very nice animation. As expected there was little deviation in the story but it happens all the time. But I hope they shortly come up with more of the parts of story.

I don't know why there weren't more people in the theater. This is "the" animated movie I've been waiting for. An Indian epic brought to life in a very compelling format. It's got everything - clever and engaging storytelling, beautiful animation (a given) and great background score. A real winner from Arnab Chaudhuri and Disney. Must watch. Not just for the kids.

what is this twist in the end they are all talking of? am not a kid; but awaiting to watch my all time favorite hero. Btw, Chanakya's Arthshastra mentions Mahabharat as Itihaas( History) and not as mythology. Maybe it all actually took place!

Obviously it is history and NOT mythology. Or do you think that a person wrote a novel who had understanding of all the weapons, warfare and strategies, understanding of the societies and civilizations who travelled all of the India to locate every village, town, city as they are on our map of India in around 400 BC (that is the date of earliest evidence found of Mahabharata). And then the novel was copied and circulated all our India so people took the names from it randomly and used them as there last names and gotras. Ofc not :) Our history was re-written by Britishers and that I hope you know very well why they did it.

Nishant, I have been telling her stories on Mahabaratha for the last couple of years. So she knows the background :-) As a parent its important to put these sensitive things in a delicate manner they understand. Hope I am doing the right thing :-)

I did my research and came to this conclusion that there is no compelling evidence that Mahabharat and Ramayana are historical. However, I must say that they are build-up of folklore on some king and many times exaggerating.

Is that so? Mahabharata is not historical. May be possible that someone of krishna existed or like that, but all the mystical things that have been put in story of Mahabharata made is mythical. If you want to debate on that please give your mail id, we can have email debate.
