The film is about Chandrasekhar, head of Metro Crime Stopper Cell, who is challenged by a serial killer.
Grandmaster offers the most homely visuals featuring Mohanlal of late. He plays Chandrasekhar, a divorced, brooding senior cop with a resigned look. The initial scenes have him carefully removing the wrinkles from his shirt, mixing chappati dough and affectionately watching his lone daughter sipping ice-cream whom he meets once in a week. He is an avid chess player who is engrossed in the game while in office.
Even when he is preoccupied with a murderer - who kills women and leaves behind childish clues - Chandrasekhar finds time to buy his daughter pastries and turns up for her daughter's school functions. In Grandmaster director Unnikrishnan seems to indulge in a pain-staking process with a dual purpose. His hero is normal person blessed with intelligence. When a killer challenges him to a deadly cat-and-mouse game, the chessboard becomes the motif that reflects their combat.
He plants few strands of grey-hair on Mohanlal to make him look old but fearing audience rejection, he makes Jagathy Sreekumar - Chandrasekhar's colleague- recount the officer's past exploits to the youngest cop in the office. In addition to this Chandrasekhar is made to appear sedate initially, so that his final transformation appears glorious.
What happens in the process is that Unnikrishnan ruins his very objective. As the murderer gathers strength, Chandrasekhar forces himself into absolute inaction. What happens eventually is that what was considered dispensable suddenly gets deployed.
Chandrasekhar who at one point looked so passive assumes forceful brilliance. The normal aspects involved in a crime scene are wiped out. He does it all alone leaving everyone in awe. Chandrasekhar doesn't even bother to seek the assistance of allied departments that are naturally associated while investigating a crime.
Once Chandrasekhar returns to his brilliant old self, Grandmaster ceases to be a chilling murder mystery. The result is appalling. All the intelligence he unleashes is undone by the vulnerability of the antagonist who looks very flimsy to deserve such an intimidating opponent. Finally, much ado about nothing.

Appreciate Ronnie Screwvala & Siddharth Roy Kapur for releasing the movie for US/International viewers through NETFLIX and other such channels. Movie disappointed us. I will NOT recommend to watch this unless you have enough time to spare and have a service such as NETFLIX you already paid for the unlimited movies available with them. Nevertheless, thanks for releasing this in NETFLIX.

Great Movie !! Worth watching a thriller. Got to see the movie on the 1st day of the release. The 1st half illustrates the boring life of officer Chandrasekhar's divorced life. And second half a nail biting suspense with a thrilling CLIMAX !! LALETTAN is BACK !

A tailor made role for MohanLal. This is something he can do in sleep. Good script and good thriller story. Upset for hardcore Mohan lal fans as there is no punch dialogues, but what can we say its Mohan Lal all and all. He shows that he is the best in business.
