Narasimha Rayudu (Balakrishna) is a righteous patriarch of a royal family. He gives away his ancestral home, Gandharva Mahal, to his brother in-law Phanindra Bhupathi (Sonu Sood), but it turns out to be a big mistake and he dies in the bargain. Narasimha Naidu comes back from the dead to team up with Manchu Manoj 40 years later to save his family home.
Movie Review: It would be fair to say the film lives up to its title rather quirky sounding title, "Uu Kodathara Ulikki Padathara" which translates as "Will you nod in agreement or shudder in shock?" It's just that except for Vu Kodathara Vulikki Padathara" which translates as "Will you nod in agreement or shudder in shock?" It's just that except for Balakrishna and Lakshmi Manchu, there isn't too much nod in agreement about. We'll add the back ground score and the elaborate Gandharva Mahal set also to that list as well.
There's plenty of shock value (which borders on the bizarre) though. The introductory song of Manchu Manoj which goes Prathi Kshanam Narakame... has the actor slashing everybody in sight in what seems like a rather gory prison break sequence. The sight of a bare-chested, clean shaven and kajal-wearing Manoj, soaked in blood, is pretty weird, to say the least. Even as you are coming to terms with it, you realise that the episode was meant to be a joke. Pretty dark humor that doesn't really make you laugh, but it sort of sets the tone for what's to follow.
Thankfully, it's not all that dark though. Balakrishna is easily the brightest spot of the movie. He looks regal as Narasimha Rayudu (Balakrishna), a descendent of a royal family. Wife Visalakshi (Panchi Bora) and Jagadamba (Simer) complete his family. He gets his sister married to Phanindra Bhupathi (Sonu Sood), who turns out to be the wrong kind of guy. Phanindra manipulates Narasimha Naidu into writing away the ownership of the family home in his name and even murders his wife Jagadamba. He plans to get married to Amruthavalli (Lakshmi Manchu), the daughter of a prostitute.
An enraged Narasimha Naidu kills his brother-in-law and dies, swearing to protect the family home from anyone trying to defile it. That's the flash back. Forty years later, the ancestral home is in danger again and how his spirit comes back to save it with the help of Manchu Manoj is the crux of the story. Deeksha Seth plays Jagadamba, the haughty grand daughter of Narasimha Naidu and the love interest of Manchu Manoj, who surprisingly doesn't seem to have a name in the movie!
The second half is the highlight of the movie. But then there are too many characters and sub-plots that hinder the flow of the narrative. Lakshmi Manchu's character is the surprise element of the film. There are loads of special effects as well, especially in the supernatural climax episode.
To sum it up, "Vu Kodathara Vulikki Padathara" is one of those films that tries hard push the envelope, but succeeds only in parts. It does offer some moments though, better execution could have raised the movie experience by a fair few notches.
