I owe a big thanks to Shabana Azmi for guiding me to Mumbai's most authentic and outstanding Hyderabadi food eatery. And also for accompanying me to this unpretentious, inexpensive, tiny and simple eatery. Its menu is a pure road map to pleasure. Exquisite cuts of meat, perfection in spicing, a masterly grasp of the art and science of Hyderabadi cooking and yet the dishes are priced Rs. 75-250 each (platters are higher upto Rs. 500). You must visit Hyderabad Spice. We eat together in this nondescript eatery tucked away in a side street. Two little rooms, with red handi lamps and a tiny "Charminar" complete the ambience. We get high on outstanding robust-and-dense-with-flavour Talawa Gosht; the lusciously firm and subtle with mint and coriander Chicken Hazare Kebab; the silken, firm Shami and Shikampuri Kebabs and enjoy the plump Arbi Tandoori Chicken with a marinade of hung curd. And then the flavours of chironji and kaju in the Pasinde Murgh start seducing as we nibble on a crisp Tandoori Roti. Mirchi ka Salan is a masterpiece in its richness yet fresh chilli flavour and so is the Bagharey Baingan too. Plenty for veggies. And then (trumpets please!) the melt-in-the-mouth, broken wheat and meat Mutton Haleem. A must-try. Robust Paya and Zaban too. In Khubani ka Meetha, the squishy-soft sweet apricots, explode with flavour caressed by the velvetty Vanilla Ice Cream. P.S. Villain ban gaya hero. I discover that the brilliant and tall owner-chef Montoo is a civil engineer-turned-actor from Hyderabad (who plays lead-villain roles). As this book goes to press, I am informed that Hyderbad Spice is set to undergo a menu change in a month.

Here at the Hyderabad Spice the food is what you get exactly in Hyderabad. From keema, kebab to shorba and biryani everything is authentic Hyderabadi in this restaurant. I have been coming to this place for a long time now and I love eating their Shikampuri Kebab, Paya and Talawa Gosht.
