or some strange reason, pure vegetarian restaurants are almost always considered to be simple and non luxurious and veggies to be teetotalers. Tuskers at the recently opened Sofitel hotel disproves both. It serves shudh vegetarian fare in a plushly appointed, contemporary global ambience with a sprawling bar and wine walls, Queen Anne high back leather chairs, patterned thick carpets et al. rn Rajasthani and Gujarati fare is put to the acid test by Avni whose home kitchens cookup the most authentic fare. rnYou just have to try the rarely available and sublimely made “sanger ke kofte” with their perfect balance of texture and explosion of ker sanger's flavors. Even the “Papad bhuji” with its crushed and spiced papad and Paneer stuffed gujia pass muster, “its exactly how we make them at home” pronounces Avni, “the superb shikanji too”. For Mandira it's the unusual “kela angur tikki” which works the magic. I am over the moon to find dal batti churma on the menu (the last time I had it Jiger and Satyanarain Maharaj had cooked it at home). Sure! The batti is a bit hard, but crushed and soaked in the dal and eaten with the sweet churma does a great jugalbandi.rnDisappointments? Even the simple to make khichya is hard and the pyaz ki bhuji is tasteless. Chaat and dahi wada missing and too many fried dishes here. We also order from the “international” menu of pizza, sushi. Avoidable.Outstanding moong dal halwa with a perfect spike of sweetness and crispness. Would we come back? Certainly. Though chairs are comfy ( the contemporary decor and the candlestand pattern on the curtains is a bit confused).Though portions are small and an average meal for two Rs 3500 per head, its the perfect place to get a taste of home style Maharaj's traditional Rajasthani and Gujarati cuisine (skip the sushi and pizza) in a stylish setting. rn rnP.S Tuskers is named after the largest vegetarian animal. After all the non stop eating I do, am going to end up looking like one.

They have very interesting Veg menu and as long as the food tastes good I am drawn to any place. Last time I had Sanger ke Kofte and it was lovely to the core. Must say they are doing prty well with the Indian food.

I went there with a friend who is vegetarian and I was cribbing and complaining cos I am a true blue non vegetarian.
The server recommended chai tapri as I wanted something very refreshing. And boy was I blown away! It was super. We ended up ordering 3 in total for the 2 of us!!
Started of with makai ke pakode, the best I have had till date! I am still craving it. Then we ordered kele aur angoor ki tikki, once again, lip smacking! On to our 3rd starter; Makai khichiya, tasty but small portion.
For our main course, we ordered Pittod ki sabzi, Bharwan Ghatte and Jaisalmer ke channe. The sabzis were awesome, but my favorite was Jaisalmer ke channe - 10 on 10!
The masala puri was nice! but the theplas and bhakri were very tough.
We also called for dal panchmeli on our server's recommendation, with Jaipuri meva pulao. Dal was ok, but personally I am not fond of dried fruits in rice, so my friend ate that all! She loved it. So I ordered bajre ki khichdi! it is one of the most amazing thing i have ever tasted. (going back specially for that)
For desserts, gajar ka halwa was just ok but the moong dal ka halwa and assorted kulfi were sensational!
All in all, a very good experience. Will definitely go back for the makai ke pakode and bajre ki khichdi.
Favorite Dishes / Drinks: Chai Tapri, Makai ke pakode and Bajre ki khichdi
