Visiting this fans-whirring-overhead Udupi restaurant complete with rounded cafeteria benches (fixed to the wall and ground) on either side of a narrow walkway in the centre, reminds me of my school days, when Balaji was the spot for authentic South Indian VFM-fare. During this visit, as I look around, I notice that this dimly lit, no-frills landmark, is still as popular with school and college students alike, in addition to weary shoppers who halt for a quick bite. As you get through your Makhanwala, Puri-Bhaji, Aloo ka Paratha and biryani, you'll hear the cacophony of Hill Road pouring in to this small, crammed eatery. Skip Chinese in favour of Pao Bhaji. In the mornings, they serve good Upma and overall, offer fantastic VFM food (through dinner) as they want more people to access them through www.bandranet.co/web/balaji.html. Bandraites in the mood for something snacky can enjoy Balaji's in the comfort of their homes.
