Done up like the courtyard of a Mangalorean home, with rustic veranda and recreated open sky, is this fine restaurant serving coconut-rich cuisine from the lands that stretch between Mumbai and Karnataka. Master Chef Ananda Solomon continues to wow us with his amazing Indian Coastal cuisine (served in antique silver and brass tableware) even after 14 years. Armed with fresh ingredients, a small chargrill, a cast-iron Appam Kadhai and hand-pounded masalas, he culls his dishes from the finest home cooking of Alibaug, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Karwar and Mangalore, and changes it with the seasons (the most recent addition being the Kokum Garlic Makli or squid, an appetizer with a saucy coating). Go for the classics like Kori Gassi, Meen Polichattu, Pepper Garlic Prawns, Mangalorean Chicken Curry and, of course, the Appam and Stew. There is plenty for veggies too (Basale Gassi, Brinjal, Taute Puli Minchi, Potato Chop, Mixed Usal). Ask for the seasonal specials. While here, you must try the home-made achaars and papads, and don’t leave without trying the home-made Paan Ice Cream and the newly introduced Bebinca with Paan!rnrnP.S. Refined of palate and slim of wallet? Ask for the VFM Unlimited Thali (Rs. 1,045; veg, non-veg and seafood).

With the friendly service and nicely decorated ambiance, Konkan Café has made its name in my Mumbai food joint list. I had Meen Polichattu and Kori Gassi, which were delicious. My friends tried Chicken Curry, the Appam and Stew, which were again mouth-watering. We guys had lovely time at the joint.
