John Cage (1912 - 92) is sometimes lauded as one of the most influential American composers of the 20th century. He was a pioneer in several fields, such as extended techniques, electro - acoustic music and indeterminacy, and was strongly influenced by ideologies of the East, such as Indian philosophy, Zen Buddhism and the I Ching, an ancient Chinese text. To celebrate his centenary, we present an evening of music inspired by the East: Central & North Asia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea and, of course, India. A special feature of the evening will be the world premiere of a new piece, The Words of Tagore, commissioned for Con Brio 2012 by Korean composer Kyong Mee Choi and scored for soprano, narrator, piano and electronics. We will also present the chamber art song Kingurivali by the inimitable Vanraj Bhatia, 2012 recipient of the Padmashri Award. Also representing India will be a selection of traditional Goan folk songs arranged by Mark Troop with Praveen Karkare on the tabla.
Tickets are priced at Rs. 500 and Rs. 300.
