Quiet, old-time charm exudes from Awatramani's West End Hotel's high-ceilinged restaurant that houses a separate vegetarian kitchen (they serve Jain food too). For 62 years, The Gourmet, in this hotel (located next to the Bombay Hospital and behind the Income Tax Department) has withstood the test of time. Buffets galore here! Breakfast (Rs.350; 7am to 10am), Lunch (Rs.450; 12.30pm to 3pm) and Dinner (Rs.450, 8pm to 10.30pm). Lunch and dinner spans 16 dishes, a mix of Chinese, European/Global and Indian fare, including four non-vegetarian options. European/Global Fare (Fish 'n' Chips, Chicken Breasts Stuffed with Asparagus, Caramel Custard) is my pick. The hotel recommends their Fried Chicken in Hot Garlic Sauce, Reshmi Kebabs and Butter Masala, as well as Paneer Makhanwala. Banana Splits are frequently ordered. Seafood here is served fresh and only in season. The central location and open-through-the-day convenience makes The Gourmet a great place to catch up with colleagues and friends.
