This no-frills eatery was Raj Kapoor’s favourite and continues to be one of mine too! It is in this 73-year-old Matunga home (with the most authentic Tamilian food), that I filmed with Gordon Ramsay for his Channel 4 show on India. We picked this as the finest in its category. It continues to draw regulars with its consistent quality. On Sundays, for Pongal-Avial-Bhaath and on all days for your Idli–Dosa fix, you must visit this small, two-floored, white-coloured café. Savour the Idli with home-made butter and Molagapodi (more popularly known as gunpowder chutney), or eat your way through delectable Tuppa Dosa and Pesarattu Dosa, all accompanied with hearty servings of spicy Sambhar (yes, it’s unsweetened) made with the perfect podi. Upma with Molagapodi served on top is available too. On occasional morning, they make a tasty Raagi Sevai. Rasam Vada, Kadi Vada and Neer Dosa are just as famous as the Misal, and Dahi Misal (what can we say? So much is famous here!). Paan Poli fans come here on Fri/Sat. Dahi Bhaath, and Bisi Bele Bhaath are served daily. Malad residents, a `60-thali awaits you. Lemon Bhaath Pulioderai on alternate days. Ask for seasonal adais when you visit. Appam and Stew available on weekday evenings only after 6.30pm. The Ulundu (urad dal dosa), Tuppa Onion Dosa and the Raagi Dosa (finger millet dosa) get my vote. Must pick up their coffee powder as well as the decoction coffee maker, along with snacks and podis from their counter

My order for a sada dosa was a disaster, most of the review that i read raved about the food here, I beg to differ. The Dosa was not well cooked and when brought to the notice of the waiter he sermonised how the dosa was correctly prepared. The interaction was notice by the owner who has asked the waiter to take it away and serve another one. Madras Cafe may come close to making idli dosa wada, but can never make the same way as the ones that are prepared by the Palakkad Iyers. The sambhar, the sweet runny stuff without a story to tell isnt anywhere near perfect. But the fact remains this place is like the one eyed king amongst the blind

Amazing authentic south Indian food. Makes you keep craving for more.... South Indian coffee, sambhar, rasam, dosas, idli you won't feel content. The rates for a meal is fairly low. Service very very friendly and warm. The queue for your meal and achieving a seat to sit can be half battle won here!!

Dishes: Rasam Vada

Tips: Get a table reserved before going,Has outdoor seating,Good place for couples,Offers free Wi-Fi,Good place for business meetings,Accepts reservations,Has happy hours
