Recent introductions include VFM yet lavish Lunch Buffets (Rs. 599) and Dinner Buffets (Rs. 599) in this sprawling, irregularly shaped, high-ceilinged space. Tall imposing statues et al. Its large menu zigzags through China. Fluffy steamed buns (both the starter and the fluffy, Steamed Custard Buns) are worth trying. As are the Corn Cream Curd, Fried Prawns and crunchy lettuce wraps with a tasty filling. Passable Stir-fried Chicken with Chilli Oil and Spring Onion, overcooked and stringy Peking Duck. The fish (steamed) lacked freshness and the rice lacked flavour, the vegetables (broccoli and bok choy) were overloaded with garlic. Passable noodles. Our dessert? Steamed buns plump with sweet custard... steamed and fried options... a sweet ending. More than the food, Balthazar's dramatic interiors (split-level sprawling space, three premium bars) has plenty going for it as a party place. Could it be that in anticipation of this, it's been named Balthazar (a 12-litre champagne bottle)? Once its teething troubles have been fixed, this flamboyant restaurant will rock.
