He sees her for the first time on the street, walking slowly towards him like poetry in motion. She is dressed in a black sari and matching blouse; her pitch-dark hair caressing her body. And in that singular moment, Sachin (Prateik), a mechanical engineer who wants to make movies, is transformed into a butterfly of uncontrollable desire. He is smitten and finds himself walking on air.
But love never comes easy. Especially if the boy belongs to a family of Marathi Konkanastha Brahmans and the girl Jessie (Amy Jackson) is a Malayali Christian. There are other 'pangas' too. The girl is older than him and her father and brother abhor the boy. But Sachin is too besotted to notice.
Intense stories of first love are rare in Bollywood Lite nowadays. But Ekk Deewana Tha, originally made in Tamil, takes the route of extreme ardor. Love isn't a walk in the park here; it is the war of life itself, a battle that envelops those involved and almost consumes them. Love is like a buried treasure that lies only at the end of a hard journey - and one doesn't know till the very end whether it is really attainable at all.
The good thing about Ekk Deewana Tha is that it chooses deep conversations and not deadly fists to reach where it finally wants to. It doesn't offer any insights into the art of love; rather it merely lays bare the regular confusions - is it love or friendship? - of young hearts. Exquisitely lensed in lush Kerala by cinematographer M S Prabhu, the movie gets too self-indulgent in the end; the last 20 minutes could have been trimmed to 10. The love story of Sachin and Jessie never becomes your own though the lead pair is okay. Prateik's voice is evocative; Amy Jackson, a former Miss Liverpool, reeks of an understated sensuality, though strangely, her skin-tone keeps varying with every scene. But together they fail to synergize their performances. Ramesh Sippy's presence too doesn't add any sholay to the proceedings. May be the movie needed more spunk in Manu Rishi's dialogues, to elevate itself. Even A R Rahman's music wouldn't figure among his Top 20 films.
Ekk Deewana Tha has its moments but it doesn't really put you in the mood for love.

i loved this movie.................super hit!! A must watch. i have watched a million time...i couldnt over n over again. superb songs picturization of the songs/scenes were mindblowing.... amy and pratik hot hot hot! their acting was really good. amy looked soo beautiful in desi clothes espeaciialy in saree couldnt take my eyes of off her. beautiful love story. this critic is and idiot. he doesnt know movies!

Its an amazing story telling, neat and clean. the way things go in it, its like real happening in practicality with you. I felt the charm of Prateik and Amy. Its like, its happening with you. Whatever people has commented on it. I simply loved it. watched it 3 times already. Simplicity of amy shown in this is just awesome. Manu rishi is outstanding, love him after oye lucky.. Amy looks simply Gorgeous.. She is the gonna go real high, i m sure. Love stories at this very point of time, its too tough to be noticed in bollywood, but it really worked. This is so believable that can happen with anyone anytime. pratiek n amy.. i love you guys.. thanks for this one.. full marks to the director.. Cheers. Danny from dubai

I didn't like the movie very much. You can go and watch it if you don't have anything else to go on your weekend. The music is very good and the acting of Prateik is also good.

The film has nice story but gautham must should bring the similar things which were done in tamil such as the some scenes are changed and the location in tamil and telugu were in america at ending if this were retained in hindi then it would be a hit. And my sugesstion to gautham menon is that he should not put load on him since he is making a trillingual film nethane yean ponvasantham in tamil, telugu, hindi which he will not able to concentrate on project

It is a fabulous movie in Tamil which explains love is beautiful even it pains. It explicits how a girl reacts in her life practically when she loves.. Everyone will think this movie is their own story because everyone likes to feel the Pain of love. Mutual Thinking - love. Trisha was beautiful and charming in Vinnaithandi varuvaya than Amy in Ekk deewana tha. Simbu was smart too. What i feel is the way of giving the story in hindi is not as much stronger than in Tamil. Something missing. but, i wish everyone who speaks hindi should watch this film. I loooooooovvvvvvvveeeeeeeee the film.

Well , honestly i did not like this film , the start was good and hosanna song was very soothing but later on the movie was being dragged with unwanted songs and story the similar which was have seen almost many times in old bollywood films and the treatment was also not so different. Acting wise ..prateek babar is really in the learning phase and needs to have some expressions ....amy looks beautiful but also needs to acting exposure.....Overall movie could have been better and the script could have been well drafted and made.

hmmm.... welll i definitely think Amy needs few more acting classes... but prateik i felt was good... he was just like a normal guy... who won't raise eyebrows like sharukh khan or give heavy punch lines like salman khan... he was just being normal... and i felt it was very real... yeah i do feel its was "khichaofying" the plot a bit... frankly speaking... it was more like my love story... yes for me it's real... it's my story and may be that's y i loves it... after a long tym i got to c a simply story... just a LOVE STORY : )

Could not agree more... Trisha and Siddharth were my best bet for the hindi version...Simbu was great in VTV... I just cannot understand how the same director can make such a bad remake after making such a classic in Tamil!

It would have been better if the actors were others, who could act better in these roles... Movie was well directed in the other 2 langs (Telugu and Tamil)... Dialogues were dramatic and dialogue delivery was also not good... Only thing in the movie is music...

Is it?. i think all the Hindi movies are originally narrated by the directors. Then why the directors from North India are pleasure to remake the south Indian Films. (500) Days of summer was released on August 7, 2009 While shooting of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa had started on February 14, 2009. Hollywood movie is more of a comedy while the Tamil is serious. I agree the main stories have resemblance but it can be just coincidence.
