Synopsis

A group of seven students travel to a place, surrounded by trees, to shoot a final year project film. All that is found later is a camera with the footage of their film

Critic's Review

In times of information overload, garnering eyeballs is tough task for any experimental filmmaker. But the makers of ? appear to have hit upon a marvelously inventive idea of attracting attention. By just naming their film the way they have seems to have raised online curiosity and become possible fodder for tweets.

The movie takes its basic template from the 1999 guerilla Hollywood hit, The Blair Witch Project, and it is possible to suggest other influences too. But this is a very smart localized scare-flick that relies primarily on an idea to define its personality. Apart from the larger gimmick of showing everything as footage found from a camera, the film refrains from using standard horror-film props, rather relying on the helplessness of the protagonists to gain sympathy.

The makers avoid every form of cinematic excess. The spirits announce their presence very gently -- the screen melts for a moment as if a pebble has been thrown into water before becoming normal again. The spirits are evil but they seldom scream; often they are just a gentle whisper. There are no monsters and no manipulative background music. Yet sounds - a sudden loud bang or a dull thud - are used adroitly to scare.

Made on a bikini-budget, ? is efficient experimental cinema with clever use of the dialogues and sharp camerawork. That's a compliment to the behind men and women behind scenes. It wouldn't have worked but for the natural acting by the gang of seven, most of them rookies. They really look and behave like friends. Simraan (the character's name) is special in the scene where the spirits drive her into a frenzy. That's physical acting at its best.

It is sad that the film does not mention the name of the actors and technicians in its credits to emphasize on its 'fake' authenticity. Even the name of director is given as the guy who "compiled the footage". Nonetheless, go and drench yourself in fear. Couples watching the film might find themselves clinging to one another for reasons other than love.

This movie is much avoidable as it lacks any story and substance. Typical of most Bollywood movies. Don't waste your time and money on it. Just go around watching something else.

The directors Yash Dave and Allison Patel credit themselves with a ''footage compiled by'' credit. We don’t see the conventional opening credits spelling out the cast and crew either. The idea is to stay as authentic to the idea as possible. The idea being that the film presents its spooky story in the form of ‘found footage’. A popular genre, and introduced for the first time in a Hindi film, the design is to make you forget that it’s a scripted and shot product. And does succeed in making you suspend reality for intermittent moments. We meet a college gang on their way to a hill-station to shoot a project film. The trip is full of nonsensical and constant banter common among friends that age. They also talk about their future-some have it completely sorted and have picked out the institutes out for higher education; others want to live it up some more. When they finally reach the winding road that leads to their destination-a dilapidated bungalow- your heart skips a beat. But the kids are unperturbed and gather around a bon-fire at night discussing the paranormal. Weird stuff happens that night, spookier happenings take place the next. A raggedly doll is discovered during a film recee; a game of Dark Room turns volatile. The kids feel the place is possibly haunted; what’s worse they realize it’s a place difficult to escape. The film scores on building real, intelligent characters. This age-group is grossly misrepresented in our films and usually portrayed as air-headed idlers. Here, these young men and women, with distinct personalities, are bright and insightful people who cherish their friendships. On realizing the place is not quite normal, the equation shifts. Their frustrated fights, meltdowns and breakdowns are expertly filmed. The cast is impressive, and most of the actors should have a bright future ahead. Camerawork and sound effects are well-executed. Built on a simple premise, the film is inspired by Hollywood films like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity that present the story in the form of ‘found footage’. The basic story of a bunch of young people going to shoot a film is taken from The Blair Witch Project. Other techniques like the ECU (Extreme close-up) of a character talking into the camera are direct TBW rip-offs. The film did need better editing. There are scenes that go on and on, but one suspects the intention is to maintain the authenticity of the ‘found footage’ concept. The repetitive scenes do get monotonous in the second-half, as by now, we’ve pretty much guessed the end. Where the film also falters is the lack of explanation as to why the entity wants to harm these kids. Is the film assuming that all paranormal entities, if they do exist, are evil? If not, then what has rattled this entity to vent out on them? If you don’t ask these questions, and take the film as it is, it’s pretty engaging stuff. Scary enough to please the horror film-buffs, but not overwhelmingly terrifying.

The people of India dont want to hear false promises and endless rounds of corruption by Congress misgovernance. They are tired of the BJPs communal agenda and time waste politics of mandir masjid. The people of the country want growth without corruption and communal violence. They want a government which listens to their voice. Only the AAP has listened to the voice of the people. They have got the confidence of the people and have taken the drivers seat in Delhi. Come 2014 and the AAP will bring a new era of clean politics and growth oriented governance to the whole of India.

In 2014 there will be a new dawn arising in India and the people will usher in the winds of change with Namo.

The showdown for the next elections has begun. But the people of the nation have made their decision. Years of loot and corruption coupled with vote bank pseudo secularism and misgovernance has shown the people all too well that the Congress is not the right option for India. No wonder the people have given a rousing call for change and in 2014 they will usher in the change with Namo.

Years of corruption, pseudo-secularism, apathy and mindless public loot will only come to an end when this dynastic Congress is thrown away. And Indians will do just that when they kick out the Rahul-Sonia coterie and vote in a new era of growth and development with Namo in 2014. Ek do ek do Congress ko phenk do.

The people of this country have suffered way too much at the hands of dynastic rule. Years of crony politics, pseudo secularism and casteist vote bank initiatives have ruined the fiscal situation of the country. And they will still not stop at their populist and appeasement ways. Its time to throw out this dynastic demons headed by Manmohan and Rahul. Its time for the people of India to usher in true, secular and positive growth with Namo in 2014.

Congress ke Rahul baba aur Manmohan Singh ne is desh ka sarvanash kar diya hain. They and their party have made us public look like fools who have to tolerate mindless corruption and inefficiency on a daily basis. It is time we Indians rise and throw out these demons for good before they become a cancer in Indian society. It is time for us Indians to come together and usher in a new era of peace and secular prosperity with Namo in 2014.

Years of mis-governance and rampant corruption by the UPA have hollowed the hopes of Indians. The vast majority of youth are still desperate for jobs and basic infrastructure. All along the Pappu-Manmohan brigade has just sung false praises to hoodwink the public while keeping alive their agenda of corruption and loot. They have destroyed the growth indices and pushed the country towards fiscal brink. No wonder Indians at large are seeking a new leader who can save the country from obvious disaster. In all the discussions in the run-up to 2014 the most obvious message to Indians is loud and clear "Modi is filling the vacuum of visible leadership in India and will take India to new levels of growth and development sans the pseudo secular, casteist and divisive politics". Come 2014 and Indians will shine back to glory with Namo

I have seen similar movies before. I have seen the original Blair witch project, Paranormal Activity, Ragini MMS. I personally believe this movie does gives you creeps beyond all those movies. The timings of scenes are done especially good. They way, the director has taken the movie to its climax is truly awesome. And the acting of the peoples looked really awesome. They look pretty natural. Overall this is the best movie in its category. At least to me.
