Synopsis

The real-life story of subedar Paan Singh Tomar, a seven-time national champion athlete and Army jawan who became a dacoit

Critic's Review

Sportsmen and outlaws inhabit two different universes. One shines amidst the bright lights of glory, the other haunts the ravines of notoriety. But in director Tigmanshu Dhulia's biopic, Paan Singh Tomar, the two worlds collide. And the result is a rather exquisite blend of drama, humour and tragedy; altogether eminently enjoyable good cinema.

Beginning 1958, Tomar was a seven-time national champion in steeplechase, a grueling athletic event where participants jump over seven water hazards and 28 hurdles while running a distance of 3,000 metres. Born in the dacoit-infested district of Morena, Tomar was an Army jawan too. He didn't run for pleasure; only for better food that athletes were entitled to. How a simple jawan becomes a feared outlaw is the kernel of the film's story.

Dhulia, who worked with Shekhar Kapur in the seminal Bandit Queen, enters the crevices of the badlands of Chambal river and makes you understand how bandits are born. But he also brings out the camaraderie of the jawans and the gentle humour of a unit are rather well brought out. The beauty of the movie is that it blends the personal with the larger social truths. Tomar may have been running in Tokyo but back home in his village, his family must suffer the same oppression and humiliation as others.

The movie shows how Tomar himself is part of the feudal mindset in his own way. He prides in the fact that his uncles are outlaws and he tells his coach not to abuse him. For him, that is unacceptable. The movie illustrates the linkages between land and dacoits - how every affront becomes part of a memory and how every murder becomes a link to another, a never-ending chain.

The movie works because Irffan makes Paan Singh Tomar come alive as an athlete, as a husband and as a dacoit. This is a flawless performance from a consummate actor. As his wife, Gill comes up with a rare restrained performance. There is humour as well a delicate intensity in the romantic scenes between the two. Dhulia gets great work from the remainder of the cast. The camerawork, especially of the ravines and the river, is excellent.

In a country obsessed with overpaid cricketers, a biopic on a former national champion athlete is reason enough to celebrate. But Dhulia's film is much more. It is one of superbly crafted film that underlines the linkage of life, sports and society.

It is perhaps a sign of Bollywood maturing that another biopic on a famous athlete is in the making: Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, on sprinter Milkha Singh. Till then, let us just relish the pleasure of watching Paan Singh Tomar.

The people of India dont want to hear false promises and endless rounds of corruption by Congress misgovernance. They are tired of the BJPs communal agenda and time waste politics of mandir masjid. The people of the country want growth without corruption and communal violence. They want a government which listens to their voice. Only the AAP has listened to the voice of the people. They have got the confidence of the people and have taken the drivers seat in Delhi. Come 2014 and the AAP will bring a new era of clean politics and growth oriented governance to the whole of India.

The people of the country are making the right noise and giving the right signals. They are pointing to a new era of Indian democracy sans pseudo-secularism, petty politics and corruption. They are all set to show the door to the Congress who have misruled the country for quite along time. In 2014 there will be a new dawn arising in India and the people will usher in the winds of change with Namo.

Long years Nehru and India made the tryst with destiny and accomplishment. Today after 66 years those visions are still a hollow dream for Indians. The decades of misrule, corruption and pseudo-secularism of the Congress has ruined the hopes of millions to rise above the dust. Its time for Indians to throw away these Congress demons and usher in a better life. Come 2014 and the people of India will do just that and rise and shine to a better future with Namo.

The showdown for the next elections has begun. But the people of the nation have made their decision. Years of loot and corruption coupled with vote bank pseudo secularism and misgovernance has shown the people all too well that the Congress is not the right option for India. No wonder the people have given a rousing call for change and in 2014 they will usher in the change with Namo.

This movie is much avoidable as it lacks any story and substance. Typical of most Bollywood movies. Dont waste your time and money on it. Just go around watching something else.

Years of corruption, pseudo-secularism, apathy and mindless public loot will only come to an end when this dynastic Congress is thrown away. And Indians will do just that when they kick out the Rahul-Sonia coterie and vote in a new era of growth and development with Namo in 2014. Ek do ek do Congress ko phenk do.

The people of this country have suffered way too much at the hands of dynastic rule. Years of crony politics, pseudo secularism and casteist vote bank initiatives have ruined the fiscal situation of the country. And they will still not stop at their populist and appeasement ways. Its time to throw out this dynastic demons headed by Manmohan and Rahul. Its time for the people of India to usher in true, secular and positive growth with Namo in 2014.

Years of mis-governance and rampant corruption by the UPA have hollowed the hopes of Indians. The vast majority of youth are still desperate for jobs and basic infrastructure. All along the Pappu-Manmohan brigade has just sung false praises to hoodwink the public while keeping alive their agenda of corruption and loot. They have destroyed the growth indices and pushed the country towards fiscal brink. No wonder Indians at large are seeking a new leader who can save the country from obvious disaster. In all the discussions in the run-up to 2014 the most obvious message to Indians is loud and clear "Modi is filling the vacuum of visible leadership in India and will take India to new levels of growth and development sans the pseudo secular, casteist and divisive politics". Come 2014 and Indians will shine back to glory with Namo.

Congress ke Rahul baba aur Manmohan Singh ne is desh ka sarvanash kar diya hain. They and their party have made us public look like fools who have to tolerate mindless corruption and inefficiency on a daily basis. It is time we Indians rise and throw out these demons for good before they become a cancer in Indian society. It is time for us Indians to come together and usher in a new era of peace and secular prosperity with Namo in 2014.

I appreciate the kind of work he does. those highly overrated and self promoting directors & actors should learn from them.the likes of rohits, devgans should take a back seat. the movie shreds the indians approach towards sport-persons. no wonder teens never stop thinking of cricket & crickets .irrfan khan has the guts to work for such a fils which offers him sheer grime & dust in the ravindes of morena's. all the bext to such a pair.
